We often will link to items on our site or to forms and applications we create. However, those links sometimes outlive the source where they are hosted. We needed a way to link to content dynamically so we could update the navigation of the link if hosts change.
Services like bit.ly do this, and in a very efficient way. We had been using an dynamic service that has been discontinued. We have hundreds of short dynamic links that stopped working and wanted to be in control of them so we decided to host them.
Since we had the resources and the domain, we figured we could just make it ourselves. We have link.cityofbrenham.org as one of 5 short-link domain names for the different websites we manage.
